Jonathan James On Art

"Do your hats do things?"

I love hats, yarns, sculptures and colors. I bring all of these into my crocheted art. Each hat is my own personal symphony of beauty.

Some hats are relaxing explorations of shape. Some I take the time to plan very carefully in my mind before starting work.

In 2005, Lark Books asked me to submit my work. In 2006 they published a few of my crochet hat patterns. Julia's Cobalt Blues hat tripled as a floppy brimmed hat, a fuzzy cowgirl hat and as a ball cap. It actually could be folded into a few more and 'different' hats.

A Baker's Dozen of my hats have patterns for them now.

2008 saw my hats as part of a two season group exhibit, Art To Wear, at the Ontario International Airport, in the Los Angeles area.

Throughout I have been fulfilling custom orders, making new hats of art and whimsy and pushing the limits of the crochet field. I work only with yarn. My kinetic sculpture hats hold their shape and movements with no wire or other aids.

Custom Orders & Client Letters:

Special Art Just For YOU.

Custom Order Hats

"I love what you did ..."

"I love what you did . . . . You listened to what I like and who I am and made something to suit me. I love to work with people, whether they are landscapers, or hairdressers or hat makers that are able to set aside their preferences and listen to their client....

Her hat is turning heads

"My hat is garnering a lot of attention. Even strangers comment on it frequently and everyone loves it! So do I. It is perfect and when not being worn it has a really good spot in my room so it is decorative also!" Susan M., California, USA.

Each hat is designed exactly for the needs of a special client

First I determine a client's moods and tastes. Susan M. (quoted above) described herself as “. . . the most modest, most conservative . . . Sure you make it look any way that you like being mindful that I am unfortunately not even the slightest bit whimsical! So sorry!”

Solid communication counts

The internet lets us work as if we were down the street from one another.

Each custom order is unique. Clients receive a sturdy, wearable, fine art piece — something that can be transformed into different hats and be used as art.

I am happy when you are thrilled

Making hats for new friends is my mission in life. I love creating long-lasting, fine, wearable art. I want you to be more than pleased. Your hat needs to be special and widely praised. A 2008 news interview with me — about my hat art — is once again available online. The newspaper took older articles offline. The interviewer is journalist Dirk Langveld, of Maine.
